Learning to Play Hockey at Center Ice
ROOKIE – CHIP – VFC
If you’ve never been on skates or are looking to one day play for a school or travel team, you can learn to play at Center ice. We offer beginner players year round opportunities to learn to play and multiple starting points based on experience level. All sessions are six weeks long, practices last for 45 minutes each.
ROOKIE PROGRAM: (ages 4-8) For true beginners who have never played hockey or have little to no experience. Rookie Program works to get your skater comfortable on the ice and moving around. Building the fun and foundation of moving and playing hockey is our goal. We offer both the Center Ice Rookie Program and the Flyers Rookie Program throughout the year.

CHIP: (Ages 4-16) CHIP places an emphasis on developing the skating fundamentals required to play hockey and puck skills such as stick handling, passing, and shooting. Building upon the basic skating learned in a Rookie Program or a skating course, CHIP is the next step toward joining a travel team. CHIP offers two different classes (Minor age 4-10 and Pro ages 8-16) to best help your player develop and grow.
CHIP Minor Features:
- All participants must have their own equipment for this program
- Ages 4-10
- Prior Learn to Skate or Rookie Program completion recommended
- Cost $160
- Saturday Skills
- Traditional looking practices that use drills and small games to teach the game.
- 11:00am – 11:45 am on Saturdays
- Sunday Cross ice
- Exclusive to CHIP Minor players.
- Cross Ice scrimmages are held on Sundays. No formal instruction. Learn by Play.
- 10:15 am – 11:00 am on Sundays
- Available Sessions
- Winter, Spring 1, Spring 2, Summer, Fall 1, Fall 2
- Drop Ins Available
- Drop in for practice or scrimmage if you can’t make them all
- Drop in cost $30 per practice or Cross Ice Game.
CHIP Pro Features:
- All participants must have their own equipment for this program
- Ages 8-16
- Older Players start here
- Younger players looking to make the jump to a travel team
- Cost $160
- Saturday Skills
- Traditional looking practices that use drills and small games to teach the game
- More advanced technique and skill training than CHIP Minor
- 11:45 am – 12:30 pm on Saturdays
- Available Sessions
- Winter, Spring 1, Spring 2, Summer, Fall 1, Fall 2
- Drop Ins Available
- Drop in for practice or scrimmage if you can’t make them all
- Drop in cost $30 per practice or Cross Ice Game.
VFC: Once your skater feels confident and ready to join a team VFC is the place to go. Tryouts for teams are held in early spring each year.
